Constructing a narrative involves taking a stance: choosing

a point of view, a set of critical tools, a moment in time, a selection of subjects, settings, documentary materials, voices, images…

These choices reveal unique aspects of the process one seeks to narrate. The same historical moment, depending on the perspective chosen, can raise diverse questions and cast light or shadow on certain segments of that history. Grounded in ethical legitimacy, inclusion and exclusion are part of any historical essay (without, however, falling into an extreme relativism that would ultimately validate any narrative).

It is from this broad, reflective, and constructive standpoint that we present this visual essay by Cristina Piffer, which explores—among pasts—ways of recounting certain segments of our history by positioning itself in the neglected areas, in the fissures, in the “in-between” that resides in the archives, recovering traces as clues capable of revealing aspects that offer their capacity to resist, generating—through images, sounds, and materialities—a shock of meaning that unveils aspects which, in one way or another, ultimately constitute us socio-historically and culturally.
